On November 4, 1981, The Kitchen presented a performance by Matt Mullican during which the artist was put into a state of hypnosis by hypnotist Marc Gross. At times both funny and disturbing, a hypnotized Mullican—ostensibly lucid but nevertheless obviously dazed—moved around The Kitchen’s performance space for roughly 45 minutes, painting on the walls and floor, all the while fielding questions and taking commands from Gross.
